GLENWOOD -- Biologists were expected to set traps later today in the Gila National Forest in an attempt to capture and return to captivity the Gavilan wolf pack.

Alan Armistead, a wolf-management specialist, this morning inspected the carcass of a full-grown bull as nearly 50 ranchers, hunters and other interested onlookers gathered near the Smoothing Iron Mesa corrals to watch.

No official confirmation of a wolf kill had been made by press time, but Armistead said it looked like an apparent wolf kill. "It's the MO of this pack," he said to the crowd.

Leg-hold traps will be set out in the area where wolves have regularly been seen. Armistead said the traps will be checked hourly to avoid injury to the wolves, which will be returned to captivity at a still undetermined location.
